Review: My experience with Teach PTY Panama has been amazing and very eye-opening. I instantly felt comfortable and at home with Teach PTY because of Jose’s friendliness and hospitality. He is very hands on and supportive; and he will be with you every step of the way. The kids are so great and energetic; and they bring much energy and excitement, it is hard not to see your impact and influence on them and the community. Of course, there is always help from Jose and Carmela (supervisor) if ever needed! I never felt alone or overwhelmed. The accommodations and community were great! Jose and everyone I met were friendly and always willing to help. Jose always encouraged me to travel and experience as much as the Culture as possible. He gave great suggestions and helped me navigate the country. The food was amazing at Teach PTY! Every meal got better and better. I could not feel any less at home.

Favorite Destination in Panama: Boquete! A gorgeous mountain community that had amazing hikes and views. It was impossible to get bored. Everything was so relaxing! Just an amazing town and I can’t wait to go back

Review: Our stay at Teach PTY has been very rewarding. Jose planned a program linked to our associative project about turtles protection and environmental awareness. We had the opportunity to give english lessons to the children of Teach PTY but also in the surrounding schools. We participated to a lot of local and environmental events like the gathering of wastes, bird watching and kayak in the mangroves. Therefore we spent 2 days in Isla Caña with the association Power Pal Pueblo repainting a house and organizing activities with the children. Pedasi is a lovely village where you will be able to find everything you need like a bakery, restaurants, gift shops and a bank. There are also a lot of beaches and beautiful places to see that you can reach with a bike. The biodiversity is amazing: there are monkeys, crabs, fishes and even turtles. We were very lucky to see a Hawksbill Turtle while doing snorkelling in Isla Iguana, an island classified as natural reserve located in front of Pedasi. Thank you again Jose for your hospitality and kindness.

Review: My name is David Papier. My career since the 1970’s has been ESL/EFL. I have just returned to the US from a month of volunteering in Jose Abrego’s after-school English program for local kids in the small town of Pedasi, Panama. Jose really wants to help his country and believes he can do so by exposing boys and girls not only to English, but to basic art, music and ecology, topics that they probably don’t get much of in public school. He has teachers who come occasionally to do activities with the kids in these areas, and also has an assistant who comes regularly to start the program off with simple yoga and relaxation exercises. The kids love her; they come to the program eagerly (and often early) because they clearly feel comfortable in Jose’s house and with his friendly dog and cat. I found working with the kids a lot of fun; the emphasis is on games and other light activities involving English. The teaching is just a few days a week, so volunteers can travel on weekends; Jose knows the area and will help with plans. I strongly encourage people to join in Jose’s program and help him achieve his goal, for he will go to great lengths to ensure that visiting volunteers have comfortable living in his house and a rewarding experience.
